Mt. Everest! What an awe-inspiring name! It is Earth’s highest mountain located in the Himalayas at an altitude of 8848 meters. The international border between Tibet and Nepal runs across its summit point. Keren Su, an experienced mountain guide, would like to invite you on this once-in-a-lifetime trip to the Base Camp of Mt. Everest.
Tibet has been a forbidden land to the outside world for centuries and remains a mystery to most people. The highest plateau on earth, rising more than two miles above sea level, the Tibet Plateau has a unique form of Buddhism and culture, not found anywhere else in the world. We begin this 16-day journey from Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province. A prospering metropolitan nowadays, it still keeps much of its old day charm and a visit to the ancient teahouse will take you back to an era half a century ago. We have also arranged a visit to the Panda Base in Chengdu so you can take a look at China’s treasure animal.
Flying into Lhasa, the capital of Tibet, at an altitude of 3600 meters, we will take it easy to acclimate to the high altitude gradually. We will marvel at the grandiose Potala Palace and its many glittering monasteries. Leaving Lhasa, we will head towards the west and pass by the dazzling Lake Yamdrok-tso. Its breathtakingly beautiful green water presents a fabulous shade of deep turquoise in clear weather. For Tibetans, it is one of the three holy lakes and the home of wrathful deities. Devout Tibetan pilgrims circumambulate the lake, a walk of around seven days. On the way to the Base Camp, we will marvel at the magnificent view of a ruined fortress sitting atop a high rock ridge in Gyantse; the Tashilumpo Monastery at the foot of Drolmari, a striking view with golden roofs and white, red and black exterior walls; the fortress-like Sakya Monastery on the hillside surrounded by gray earth.
This is such an exhilarating trip. We will not only travel to the Base Camp of Mt. Everest, but experience Tibet’s rich culture, including its magnificent monasteries and different regional groups, each with its own indigenous dress, decoration and custom.
From Lhasa, we will embark on another incredible overland trip into Nepal. Descending through the clouds from the Himalayas, we will get into a lush green valley filled with waterfalls. Scenery is spectacular along the drive. We will then cross the border into Nepal and explore the city of Kathmandu, a timeless medieval town of ancient Hindu temples, Buddhist stupas, fabulous art and colorful Nepali people.
